Wine Country Casual

When it comes to packing for a trip, the women in my family (my mom's side, anyway) are notoriously ready for everything. Weeks before the actual departure date, the spare bedroom is claimed as Advance Prep Headquarters, the luggage is brought up from the basement, and the packing list is penned. Clothes are triaged according to occasion, mix-and-matchability, climate and the notorious "what ifs": What if it's cold at night? What if there is an unplanned fancy dinner added to the itinerary? What if the zombie apocalypse strikes while I'm away?

Yup, it's planned down to the last pair of socks and for every eventuality you can think of. To a fault. It's no wonder we're all so damn neurotic.

I'm days away from a wine-soaked weekend in Prince Edward County, but instead of bubbling over with glee, I'm too busy fussing over whether my pyjamas are too scruffy to be seen in mixed company. I don't know whether we're going to see a glimpse of spring or another blanket of snow, so which boots should I bring? As the anxiety compounds, items are added and removed, the list is re-drafted (again ... and then again).

Under the wardrobe concerns lies a whole other set of baggage I usually end up wishing I'd left at home: what if I don't fit in? What if I don't know enough about wine as everyone else? What if they ask me a question and I blank out? What if I make a fool of myself?

Then I read this, from social media diva Jen Taylor's blog, Little Miss Mocha: What should you bring to a conference?

I've since unpacked that extra stuff. Now I'm ready to go.
